OBO Famous Feathered Friends: Here is the story: Went to Vermont this weekend to operate te contest. Due W2AX;s planned single-band 10 meter operation, I chose single band 20 meters. In retrospect, it was a mistake. Larry never got into the contest due to equipment problems, and I certainly could have contributed more ponits to the Club had I chosen All-Band rather than single band.... Now, I am not a good Phone op,; had not done a single-op SSB contest in many years. We used W2AX for SSB in the multi-op setups for many years..In fact, the first few hours I kept signing W2A....ugh, oops, K2LE. Thank God for DVP's. By the second day, I was getting the hang of it. Finding a Clear running frequency was easy in the morning hours:(everyone was on 20 and 15 meters. You could call CQ for hours and get an occasional response from, say, South Dakota. Nuts.) In the afternoon and evening hours, the QRM was as bad as I ever heard. Runs were short lived, usually some fat EU station muscled in and shred my measly pileup into pieces. My Best hourly rate was 75 QSOs. Oh, I can do better on CW, keying with my left foot.. Adding to my woes was the demise of the low (75 ft) 3 ele. beam. Left with just one set Force-12 yagis on the rotating tower, I could not switch beam headings quickly, or listen in two directions simultaneously. More frustration: the rotator quit Saturday afternoon, but I was able to fix it by wading thru about 3 feet of snow, ( that's another story I was going to tell at the meeting). Finally, I had to quit early Sunday afternoon because of the predicted snow storm, which was of course a farce, and my family did not want me to get snowed in up alone in VT. With all the excuses, here are the numbers: K2LE/1 SO SB 20 meters HP ( no packet ) 1005 QSOs, -106 countries - 319,598 pts. Op. Time 25.9 hrs.
