N2FF - Frank Fallon

Again thanks to Larry for letting me operate his monster station in the
ARRL Ten Meter contest. Unfortunately there were wind casualties Friday
night and Saturday morning.
The tower with the ten meter stack was at full time in the high winds. I
believe there were gusts in excess of 75 mph, perhaps as high as 90 mph.
It was almost impossible to sleep Friday night. I thought I was with
Admiral Byrd at the South Pole.
Friday night was slow and we QRT after three hours and 168 QSO's. But
Saturday and Sunday were wild. I had one hour at 137 QSO's and only the
last two hours Saturday were under 50 QSOs/hour even when I broke for
food. Saturday I broke for food only once and my rate was 1076 on Sunday
as opposed to 962 Saturday. Next time I'll have it catered or use an
IV.
ARRL 10 METER CONTEST -- 1999

Equipment Description: Operating W2AX's station in Reedsboro, VT.
Kenwood 950, ARD 230 amp (pr 3CX800A7s)
antenna a stack of three Force 12 monoband
antennas on 24 booms at 89, 38 and 18 feet at
over 2,000 feet above sea level. The top two
antennas are rotatable.
Comment: It was a great experience but I sure wish I could have been
single op assisted as the score and multipliers would have been
even higher. Only when the band first opened to EU did I have all
three antennas pointed in the same direction. Even during JA
runs, and those were disappointingly short and sparse, normally
only one antenna was pointed in the prime direction. This
allowed me to work many more local stations on back scatter.
At one point I worked and EI, then a W7 in WA, followed by a
VK4. During morning EU openings there were frequently so many
stations calling that I was forced to pick up the guys who were
giving me only two letters. I didn't want to do, but I had to.
I have over 50 dupes and finally gave up even mentioning it was
a dupe and simply logged it. It's faster. There were a lot of
guys using paper logs or no logs at all.
A special thanks to my friend Larry, W2AX, who trusted me with his
station and his house.
High winds Friday night and Saturday bent the cromalloy mast
about ten degrees and broke the linkage on a nearby tower so that
a 2 element 80 meter beam and a 15 meter mono bander where
spinning in the wind. I'm sure the coax is broken by now.
