N2FF - Frank Fallon

    It was a real hoot!!!!!!!
This is bit long winded but.....
My goal was to get over 1000 QSO and a million points. I had never done
that in any contest while single op before. By Saturday night at 10 PM I had
almost 700 QSO's so I thought I was really on my way. But Sunday morning was
another story - winds kept the tower cranked down at about 28 feet and very
poor band conditions made the goal seem too far away.
I had no 160 meter antenna for the contest and therefore fewer
multipliers. Sunday afternoon I braved it and put the tower up to about 35 feet. The
BIG disappointment was condition on Sunday - no opening to EU on 10 meters
and a very weak opening to EU on 15 meters. I was not able to stay connected
on packet to K2GX so I went to N2TX but when I made contacts one after
another my transmitter seemed to desense the 2 meter receiver and I got
knocked off. The packet antenna is inside the quad.
Try as I might I was unable to run on 15 meters and twenty was too
crowded. So I went a packet pouncing. By noon Sunday it seemed I would not make
the goals I had set for myself as I was still not up to 800 QSO's. I finally
pushed myself into a slot close to 14.260 and started running and getting
replies to my surprise. The rate was up over 110 at times and I wound up
with an hour at 80 QSO/hr. I thought I was in Vermont for while. I was
called by so many EI stations it was comical. Some one most have posted
me on packet. The real thrill was being called by a 9U and the TF2IRA
who I had called unsuccessfully when he was running. After trying for
hours I gave up on him and here he called me as I ran. A check
back on 10 meters found it full of LU stations and the rate there was
almost as good as running. Getting our local 100 watt DXer in Monseratt on 80
through 10 was also a thrill. Had 10 and 15 opened I might have made 2
million. WOW!!!!!
   It was fun.

K2KV - Jeff Singer's team

Hoot Frank & all,
Great job in the contest! Looks like you beat the odds after all. We also
had similar problems, just more of them.
Propagation was great through most of Saturday, and we had logged 1500 qso's
by 5 PM. We felt we would easily hit our goal orf 2500 Q's or 3mm points.
Jerry & I spent the afternoon acquiring and configuring a new computer to
take the place of our main machine which ALWAYS crashes when we're on 40m,
and we decided that NOW was the time to make the swap (much to GA's
chagrin). We figured about 30 minutes for the job, but after more than FIVE
HOURS of murphy's entire family setting up shop on our computer repair desk,
we had to give up, all the while taking BOTH stations off the air!
Ultimately, we had to get the original computer back in line, and when we
did, the cmos battery failed, and more, and don't ask... Eventually, we got
back on, but things only got worse. Propagation plummeted steadily; I had to
sleep, gave up a shift; Jerry should have slept, but didn't, and slept well
through his next shift; Q's were hard to come by, and as soon as I awoke in
the morning the winds were howling and threatening, so the tower had to stay
down for all but the last couple of hours.
When all was said and done, we racked up 1924 Q's. 434 mults, for a total
score of 2,501,142.
And that, my friends, is radio.
73/Jeff K2KV

K2SX - Dennis McAlpine

Everytime I do this I remember about half way through why I hate SSB,
particularly with just a vertical. Could only run abt 300 watts to keep
RFI problems down and the neighbors happy. That makes it even worse.
Oh, well...
