ORDER OF BOILED OWLS
Date: Monday, May 4, 1999
Subject: Meeting Minutes .
The May 1999 meeting was held at the QTH of Jeff Singer, K2KV.
The meeting opened at 8:55 PM. Jeff Singer-K2KV presiding.
Attending: KS2G, N2GA, W2GGE, W2AX, W2LK, WM2V, NA2M,
W2YK, N2FF, K2KV, and K2LE.
The Minutes of the March 1999 meeting were read and accepted with one
modification.
George-N2GA reported plans to operate from VP5 in the CQWW-WPX CW
contest, not the SSB contest.
April Appeasement Dinner: Frank-N2FF thanked Larry-W2AX for his
selection of Restaurant Mario in Hauppauge. Applause. It was suggested
that although the round table format was okay, that we should consider
swapping seats at future dinners so that all present could exchange
greetings and conversation.
Bill-NA2M reported that e-mail to Dennis-K2SX had been bouncing. Dennis
reported problems with JUNO and in a subsequent e-mail from Dennis he
reported that his JUNO e-mail is fixed. Dennis said he could not attend
the meeting because of travel conflict.
Frank-N2FF said he fixed JUNO problems by deleting the messages in his
inbox using the explorer option in W95.
Bill mentioned a file ADZAPPER that would delete most of the ads in JUNO
when connecting. (Copies e-mailed to K2LE and W2YK).
1998 CQ WW WPX CW Contest. Loud hoots and exultations from the members
present for KW2O (K2LE & N2UN) winning USA in M/S category with
3,383,680 points. George-N2GA was also congratulated for the Tribander
Single Element All Band category at WV2LI. He was top USA scorer with
1,839,336 points.. More applause.
1999 CQ WW WPX SSB Contest. KS2G using KW2O, WM2V, N2FF, planning to
operate. N2GA will be at WV2LI again. Frank-W2YK requested that scores
be sent to him for posting on the OBO web page
(http://www.reallybig.com/obo).
NYC-LI Section Picnic July 18. George-N2GA said all clubs in the section
are invited to the picnic. He asked if the OBO wished to attend. A
contribution of $20.00 per club is requested to cover costs of dessert.
Clubs will provide their own food. No interest was expressed by those in
attendance. George invited members to attend on their own.
Club Banner. George-N2GA asked if the club would be interested in having
a banner. The response was affirmative by show of hands. George
volunteered to chair a planning committee with Jerry-WM2V and Andy-K2LE.
This led to a discussion of the origin of the Boiled Owls. Bill-NA2M
said he would contact Jim Cronn-W2GC and Dan-W8ZCQ for input. Dan was,
or is a member of the Boiled Owls of Ohio. Andy-K2LE said he would
contact Gene-W2CP for his input.
CQ WW WPX CW Contest May 28/29. Larry-W2AX and Andy-K2LE plan a
Multi/multi operation from Vermont using the KW2O club call sign. This
is contingent upon Larry's inspection of his station for damaage after
the winter. A M/S opration is an option. It is anticipated that
Tony-N2UN will wish to participate. (What say Tony?).
IARU Contest July 10/11. George-N2GA inquired about the club
participating in this 24-hour contest using one of the Vermont QTHs.
Frank-N2FF will inquire about using the W1AW call sign if available.
There was no definite show of hands for this operation and it will be
tabled for the June meeting.
FIELD DAY June 26/27. Bill-NA2M reported he sent for the permit.
Larry-W2AX said he would not be the master chef this year. Frank-W2YK
said he would be available for breakfast preparation Sunday morning as
in past years. Bill suggested contacting Frank-K2AW to see if he would
be master chef. (What say Frank?). In a show of hands of the members
present, it was evident that we will not have the participation this
year as in the past. Several members can only participate part time. In
view of this, it was suggested that we may wish to set up only one
station in the 1A class. Setup would be early Saturday morning with just
2 antennas, a tribander for 20-15-10 and a wire antenna for 80 and 40.
Bill suggested someone inviting Paul-N2RI to participate. Larry?
Frank-K2AW?
From show of hands it appears that W2AX, KS2G, W2LK, K2LE, WM2V, (K2SX
via Internet) and NA2M plan to be at FD full-time. No one volunteered to
be operations manager for the event.
(I will amend these minutes prior to the next meeting to include members
not listed who plan to participate full-time Saturday and Sunday. This
includes setup and take-down.)
Final FD details and options will be discussed at the June 7th meeting
at W2LK.
Frank-N2FF gave an overview of the recent ARRL Executive Committee
meeting in Dallas. He said no appeal is planned at this time of FCC's
rejection of the expanded call sign request. Regarding licensing
restructure, Frank feels that FCC is going to institute an
across-the-board 5 wpm code requirement. He reported that Larry
Price-W4RA was elected president of the IARU and Dave Sumner-K1ZZ
secretary. Regarding the planned name-change of ARRL, he said there
appears to be too much opposition to a proposed change to American
Amateur Radio League (AARL). Meanwhile, the ARRL will be identified as,
ARRL, the Association for Amateur Radio. Frank urged members to write
their congressional representatives to support the Amateur Spectrum
Protection Act (see page 15, May 1999 QST).
The next OBO meeting is scheduled for June 7 at the QTH of Les-W2LK. All
members are urged to attend.
The meeting adjourned at 10:15pm.
